Description

School science technicians throughout Australia, regardless of state or territory jurisdiction or employing sector, have faced certain challenges to performing their roles in terms of training and support. The lack of national standards regarding staffing qualifications and staffing ratios has been an area previously overlooked. A recent report (Hackling, 2009) acknowledges the crucial role played by science technicians in supporting practical science in schools. This report is the first of its kind to examine and report on the current national situation. The results reported highlight a number of concerns with regard to the current situation in Australia. The recommendations made in this report, if implemented, will help support technicians in their role in schools. This will in turn strengthen the support that is required for an inquiry-based national science curriculum. To have the research data concerning current levels of training, support, qualifications and staffing allocations for school laboratory technicians is excellent. The benefit of the report to technicians is that their situation has been acknowledged.
